Opened in the autumn of 2017, The Citizen Bar and Dining Rooms are set in a gorgeous A-listed building, once home to The Citizen newspaper. Lovingly restored, the St Vincent Place premises are themed around the glory days of the newspaper and aims to celebrate Glasgow, past, present and future. Set away from the vintage fittings of the main dining room, the Editor’s Suite is a grand venue for private dining or a plush afternoon tea.
From breakfast until late, The Citizen Bar and Dining Rooms offers several menus packed with dishes that range from traditional comfort food to contemporary bar classics.
From the former camp, guests could tuck into Cullen skink or a black pudding and pork Scotch egg. The latter is served with the house brown sauce. Other comfort food choices include a selection of pies, a house burger, steak and chips or a dish of Cumberland sausage and mash.
Less trad options might be the spicy buttermilk chicken; the tempura sea bass and chips or the Bangkok coconut curry. What they all have in common, as far as feasible, is their use of local ingredients.
The Citizen Bar and Dining Rooms are on St Vincent Place, just around the corner from George Square and a brief walk from Queen Street and Central Station transport hubs. There are several nearby pay car parks. Local attractions include the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and the shops of Buchanan Street.
