A popular fixture on the Stockbridge restaurant scene since the mid-Eighties, Lancers Brasserie serves Bengali and North Indian dishes. Decorated in a contemporary style, this Hamilton Place restaurant has three dining rooms, all with a regimental theme. As well as the Officers’ Club private dining room, there is the main Lancers’ Mess and the Regiment Club which features a large mural of Bengali cavalry.
Lancers Brasserie offers thali, or all-in-one set menus, as well as a keenly priced express business lunch and a la carte menu. Familiar choices include the bhunas, biryani and tandoori dishes. Less well-known options might be the sarisha murgh – diced chicken kebab cooked with mustard and green herbs in a fresh, medium strength sauce.
When it comes to fish dishes, Lancers offers options such as the boal mossallam – grilled Bangladeshi fish cooked with lemon, garlic and green herbs in a medium strength sauce – as well as lots of king prawn choices. There are several vegetarian choices including the misti sag – fresh spinach and butternut squash, cooked with green herbs and garnished with a touch of grated fresh ginger and green chillies.
Lancers Brasserie is on Hamilton Place by the bridge that gives the Stockbridge neighbourhood its name. There is restricted on-street parking and regular bus services run to and from the centre of the city. Waverley and Haymarket are a ten minute taxi. Local attractions include the Water of Leith and the Botanic Gardens.
