Great location next to the Edinburgh Playhouse. Deceiving from the outside but friendly staff and great food. Highly recommended.

Passage to India is a cheery Indian restaurant on Union Place. Sitting opposite Edinburgh Playhouse, it is ideally located for a pre-theatre dinner and, of course, also welcomes dining couples, family get-togethers and groups. Fitted with a smart, contemporary interior, the dining rooms are decorated with pictures of classic Indian scenes.
Home-style Indian cooking using traditional Indian techniques and ingredients is what the kitchen brigade aims for at Passage to India. From chicken to king prawn and lamb chops, there is a good range of dishes cooked in the tandoor oven alongside Hyderabad-style biryani options. Familiar favourites such as chicken tikka masala, lamb pasanda and king prawn jalfrezi are all available.
Moving slightly away from the beaten track are choices like the haggis samosa, the fried squid and the Kathmandu chicken. As you might expect, there are lots of vegetarian options. The daal makhani – black lentils and red kidney beans in cream – is highly recommended.
Located on Union Place, Passage to India is just across the road from Edinburgh Playhouse and a two minute walk from the Omni Centre. Several bus routes run past the restaurant heading to Leith, the city centre and the suburbs. There is limited on-street parking and Waverley train station is a ten minute walk.
