The Atelier is a clever, award-winning restaurant on Morrison Street in Edinburgh’s Haymarket. With white walls, bare wooden tables and a stripped stone feature wall, the decor is simple rather than fussy. The theatrics are all on the plate. The service is friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed.
The kitchen at The Atelier describes its food as modern European with a Scottish accent. It is certainly innovative and often features bold ingredient pairings. The menus change regularly but adventurous diners might choose the octopus Bourguignon served with crispy ox tail or the teriyaki beef salad.
More conventional options might be the pan-roast pigeon served with Spanish black pudding, plum, potato gratin and crispy kale or the slow braised ox cheek. Vegetarians are well catered for with inventive dishes such as the mushroom, goat cheese and almond strudel with butternut squash, porcini biscuit and pickled shimeji.
The desserts are also a cut above. A good example is the vanilla brioche which comes with plum, cinnamon and crème fraiche plus balsamic and coffee ice cream.
The Atelier is on Morrison Street. Haymarket train station and the tram line are a brisk five minute walk. There is restricted on-street parking and a pay parking facilities on nearby Semple Street. Local attractions include the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. Edinburgh’s theatre district is a ten minute walk.
