Part of the Drake & Morgan bar group, The Refinery is a stylish dining hub overlooking St. Andrew Square in the heart of the city. The vibe is both laidback and glamorous, so think intimate low lighting, wooden walls and furry cushions. At The Refinery, contemporary comfort food is served accompanied by experimental botanical cocktails by specialist mixologist Fabrizio Cioffi, aka ‘The Gardener’. His creations use ingredients from the restaurant’s very own cocktail garden, which includes British plants and species from Fabrizio’s hometown of Napoli. If you are looking for a relaxed yet sophisticated spot for an elegant meal or a special date, then this is where to head.
At The Refinery, you can choose between modern mains, burgers, sharing boards, salads, sandwiches and flatbreads. Menus might change, but expect mains along the lines of the sea bass with wilted greens and beurre blanc; the roast lamb rump with mash, samphire, cherry tomato and shallot & currant salsa; the bangers and mash with red onion gravy, and for veggies, the pearl barley risotto with watercress, asparagus & vegan pecorino.
Burgers choices could include the buttermilk chicken burger with chipotle mayonnaise, the 60z haggis burger with Scottish beef and rocket & dijon mayonnaise, and the Halloumi burger with hummus, red pepper and flat mushroom.
Fascinating artisan cocktails to sample include the Seal Maiden with Selkie Gin (Old Poison), peach liqueur, lemon, peach bitters & egg white and the Makeshift Greenhouse with Whitley Neill gin, yellow chartreuse, maraschino, kiwi, kaffir lime & celery bitters.
The Refinery is a handy five minute stroll from both Princes Street and Edinburgh Waverley. Given its central location, this would be a great spot to dine before heading to the Edinburgh Playhouse or the Vue cinema. If you are driving, paid parking can be found a twelve minute walk away on Greenside Row.
